'The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1' makes $72 million on opening day

The opening day figures for The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 are in.

After coming in second all-time for highest midnight ticket sales with $30.25 million, the film went on to score a total of $72 million domestically yesterday, according to The Hollywood Reporter (more concrete numbers will be unveiled on Monday).

This puts Breaking Dawn - Part 1's opening day third on the list of highest opening day figures ever, following Harry Potter And The Deathly Hallows: Part II and The Twilight Saga: New Moon (which BD1 closely follows by a margin of less than one million).

THR also reports that the film scored another $66 million on the international front yesterday and that the total weekend projections for the film are still around $140 million.

So, while BD1 might not have had the highest opening day in history, being in the top three is still quite a feat.

Here are the opening day numbers for all four Twilight Saga films:

Twilight - $36 million
The Twilight Saga: New Moon - $72.7 million
The Twilight Saga: Eclipse - $68.5 million
The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 - $72 million
